Types of Grouts for Tile installation

Grouts are used to fill the joints between the tiles. Grout material used must prevent moisture from penetrating the underlying surface. To remain waterproof for the entire life span it has to be well maintained and periodic sealing should be done.

There are mainly four types of grouts used for tile installation namely, cementitious grout, epoxy grout, polymer grouts, and furan grouts.

Cement Grouts for Tile Installation

Cement grout constituents are Ordinary Portland Cement, water-retentive additive, Coloured pigments and filler particles of different sizes. This grout is used from many years and this can be used in residential and commercial both the purposes. Some colour pigments can be added to the grout to mix and match with the tile.

There are subdivision of cement grout.

Ø  Sanded Cement Grout: In this type of grout sand is used largely. It is quite affordable compared to unsanded grout. Sanded grout provide tight lock and gives a clean and finished look to the floor.

Ø  Unsanded Cement Grout: It does not contain sand. It consists ordinary portland cement and powdered pigments of colours. It is a grout used for scratchable surfaces like metal, glass, marble, and natural stone tile.

Ø  Latex-Modified Cement Grout: The sanded grouts mentioned before, combined with a latex polymer additive, gives latex-modified cement grout. It increases the strength and water-proofing property of the grout.
Epoxy Grouts for Tile Installation
Epoxy grout contains Epoxy resin, Pigments, Hardenerand Silica Fillers. This grout does not contain portland cement and water. Epoxy is considered one of the strongest and sustainable grout material on the market. It is used in high-traffic areas like foyers, hallways, entryways, kitchen counters and types of flooring exposed to harsh conditions.
Polymer Tile Grout
It is a cement-based grout combined with polymers. This mix, when combined with water, activates the polymer. It is one of the high-performance grouts that ensures colour quality. The chemical reaction between the ingredients and the water increases the properties of chemical resistance, abrasion, and strength.
It is used in commercial space, entryways, high-traffic residence and kitchen counters.
Furan Tile Grout
It consists furan resin and filler powder plus acid catalyst. Furan tile grout is similar to polymer grout with an exception that it uses fortified materials instead of polymers.
