Quick Setting Cement

It is the type cement where cement sets initially in 5 minutes and final set is achieved in 30 minutes. This is used in the special condition of construction area like running water.

When water is added to the cement hydration takes place and the chemical reaction occurs which make the cement to harden where the initial setting time is 30 minutes and final setting time being 10hrs. In this type of cement, clinkers are grinded with aluminium sulphate which speed up the setting time. Aluminium sulphate is that it increases the rate of hydration of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and tricalcium aluminate (C3A) phases of cement, that providing earlier heat evolution and strength development. In quick setting cement maximum increase in compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength occurred for quick setting cement concrete at 3 days age and 7 days age. There was no considerable increase in compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength at 28 days age.

Uses of Quick Setting Cement

Ø  It is used under water condition.
Ø  It is used in short span of time where quick set of strength is required.
Ø  It is also used in rainy and cold weather condition.
Ø  It is used in higher temperature.
Ø  Used for fixing concrete steps.

Disadvantages of Quick Setting Cement

Ø  There is a content of sulphates in the aluminium sulphate so there is a major chance of sulphate attack on reinforcement.
Ø  The work should be completed fast when water is added otherwise it sets and mixing become difficult.
Ø  In this cement heat must be vanished otherwise it can result in cracks after setting.
Ø  It is expansive.
Ø  It is not widely used.
